Tasmania Day 2

So day 2 rolled around and we were going to try and get up early to do a sunrise at Mt Wellington in Hobart, but we were just too dang tired!  We made brekkie at home and then drove to the Salamanca Market. This market happens every Saturday and a major road by the water is closed down for the vendors. There are over 300 vendors. Locally made products include: hand-worked glass, Tasmanian timbers innovations, clothing, bespoke jewelry, organic produce, artworks, bath & body care, ceramics, leather goods, handcrafted cheeses, breads, wines, spirits and hot food.  I ended up with a pretty good homemade donut...first donut in 2 years.

After the market, we decided to head up to Mt Wellington. The mountain is 4,170 feet above sea level. It is often covered by snow, sometimes in the summer too, and the lower slopes are covered with forest. We had to take the narrow road to the summit.  It is 14 miles from Hobart CBD and initially some of the 14 longest miles of my life being on the wrong side of the road. Once we got to the top, they weren't kidding that the temperature is much cooler.  Had to pull out our down coats and it was the middle of the summer!

It was some pretty amazing views from the top. Also there were notes due to the radio towers at the top that sometimes phones, key fobs for cars don't work either.  Pretty crazy.  Aram was dreading the drive back down, but we made it and parked the car and got some drinks.  Much deserved!

We bought tickets to go to the MONA, Museum of Old and New Art. It is the largest privately funded museum in the Southern Hemisphere.  The ancient, modern and contemporary art is from the David Walsh collection. Walsh made his fortune by developing a gambling system used to bet on horse racing and other sports.

These two ferries were our rides for the day.  They have a full bar on them and music, but it was great to just go up the river to the MONA on them.

Had a blast here at the museum.  Got some ice cream on the way home which was good. By 7:30 pm, most restaurants are already closed and it's quite bizarre, you pretty much have to make a reservation everywhere.  We ended up at the Beltana Hotel for dinner. Actually ate Mexican food there that was good!  Walked back to the Air BnB and then called it a night!  We were tired!
